RUNNING
Whether starter 5K or professional marathon, sponsored runs can have a broad need for promotional products. Water bottles and banners, T-shirts and medals, sunscreen and sling backpacks, all are found at every pavement-pounding marathon. When it comes to runners and races, there’s two things you can say for sure: nearly every kind of outdoor product can have a use, and nearly every product can be plastered with ads from an outside sponsor or two.
Like many large-scale outdoor events, runs and races are prime opportunities for selling sponsored ad space on your products. But how exactly do outside sponsorships work? Using the example of bumper stickers sold to a high school, Mike Stoeck, director of sales and marketing for Stouse Inc., New Century, Kan., explained*. “250 Honor Roll bumper stickers with coupons on the liner may sell for around $200 net,” he said. “Placing ads on the liner sold to four businesses at $250 each results in $1,000 in revenue and $800 in profit. That is an 80 percent margin and the school didn’t spend a dime on them,” he said. “[Schools] see the distributor as a hero providing free product while the competitors of the distributor tried to sell them the product.”
